One of the Boys

Everyone says that when we're young, we all think that boys have germs and that we never want to even touch them. A conversation at lunch reminded me that I must have been a little diva at primary school. That, or the boys just thought of me as one of them (that would explain the no boyfriend aspect.)

At my very first school, if I remember correctly, we used to have daily fights in the playground. Not real fights (I'm guessing) just pretend silly little battles between the girls and boys. However, I distinctly seem to recall that every lunchtime the boys would ask whether I was on 'their side' or the girls would beg me to be with them. It's quite flattering now!

That then went on to my second primary school where I befriended the five boys in our very small class. I was the only girl that they would let play with them in the game of zombie tag which we played every break time and lunch time without fail for three straight years! I did slowly and effectively manage to get the other girls involved though, so by the end of year six everyone was playing. At this school, I was also the only girl on the football team. Everyone else played netball but I just couldn't get my head around not traveling with the ball, what is with that? So I became obsessed with football and started to get quite good at it, I think that was why a lot of the boys respected me and didn't mind getting paired up with me. I dropped football in high school which I quite regret now.

This has seemed to carry on into high school and although I don't spend my breaks playing tag like a little girl anymore, a lot of my best friends are boys. I guess that's my point really. Just because you have all of your girlfriends, boys aren't two faced (well not all of them) and that's what I find really comforting when I tell them my deepest secrets... (jokes, I don't have any deep secrets,) so don't be afraid to befriend a guy.

Love and chilling with the boys, Sophie xoxo

Happy Mothers Day!

We don't tend to think of this to often; if we did we'd be guilted into cleaning the house everyday and cooking the dinner, but a mum is one of the most extraordinary specimens of the universe. They put up with our pee stained beds and endless pamper diapers from day 1, and from then on it just gets harder. Hormones kick in, we start wanting more and... lets face it, we all eat a lot more than we did on day 1!

So this one day (which I think is the creation of a genius (and most likely a woman) I do try my best to make it a day that my mamma will not forget.

This is just a quick log of things I have done for my mum for mothers day and I know that it's a bit too late now for you to decide to do any of these things, but at least now you can have an idea for next year. Or why don't you just surprise your mum randomly, that will make her feel on top of the world!

#1. The Cheesecake

I am pretty sure that my cheesecake looked nothing like this, but just play along... please.

For some reason, I had decided that I wanted to make my mother a cheesecake for mothers day. I was nine and I went out to the shop by my house and tried my best to buy all of the ingredients with a ten pound note that I had saved from Christmas.

I even made red icing to write on top 'Happy Mothers Day,' but it ran into the cheese and made a gooey mess... It smelt nice though! The fridge still smelt of cheesecake months after.

#2. The doll and away

I was thirteen when I made this... kind of. I was going away skiing and I wasn't going to be here on mothers day, so I got out one of my old dolls that I thought looked most like me (pfft! I wish) and made a little sign which I stuck onto her hands.

#3. The Rings

I bought these rings for mum last year from the site 'wish' they took about a month to come because they got lost during the process, but we did end up with these really cute toy story inspired rings.

This year I left it until the last minute which was really bad of me what with the motivational speech at the top there. The shops were packed in the lunch hours yesterday and my friend and I went from store to store searching high and low for a suitable gift.

There were bundles of really cute candles on sale and bath bombs, soaps and body butters. The only problem with them though is that my mother and I are not allowed candles in our home because they don't trust us not to burn it to the ground, nor does my mum ever have time to take baths. She showers! Obviously, but she's told me that she can never relax enough to take a bath. So that scrubbed Yankee candles and Lush products off the list, which was a real shame because Lush was smelling especially gorgeous yesterday with all of it's new Easter stock.

I settled with a few bits and bobs which my mum said: 'I love them, each one has a really lovely thought behind them.'

Lots of love and devotion for mothers everywhere, Sophie xoxo

Baking from scratch

My friend and I met up for a baking day the other day. There was spilled flour over the work surface, too much and then too little cake mix, and volcano like eruptions inside the oven. (Well that just proves that you really don't know what happens behind closed (oven) doors).

The recipes were pretty simple for both of these. We followed a usual Victoria sponge recipe and then separated them into four bowls (two for the marble cake). Then we added the different food colouring (mixing blue and yellow for the green). Taking it in turns to fill the cases with the different mixtures, we realised that we didn't have enough and had to whip up another quick batch. It turned out great in the end though- minus the explosions.

The marble cake was separated into two bowls, one was kept as the usual mixture and the other we added cocoa powder to. Then down to my friends genius, we spread the mixture in dollops instead of my idea to keep adding from the middle. We used long cocktail sticks to swirl the two mixtures together and the results looked a bit like this:
